The trend predated the COVID-19 pandemic: between 2018 and 2019, the rate increased from 17.4 maternal deaths per 100‚ÄØ000 live births to 20.1. It then continued to rise to 23.8 in 2020 and to 32.9 in 2021. There were 1205 maternal deaths in 2021 compared with 658 in 2018.
