Since its discovery in 1967, when two outbreaks occurred simultaneously in laboratories in Marburg and Frankfurt in Germany, and in Belgrade, Yugoslavia (now Serbia), causing 31 cases and seven deaths, there have been 16 known outbreaks with a cumulative total of fewer than 500 reported cases.
